Commercial Kitchen For Rent?
The Wellington Hall Community Kitchen is currently approved for commercial use if the food being prepared is also being sold directly to consumers.
Permits and VIHA
Unless a kitchen user gets permission from VIHA, each commercial kitchen renter is limited to 14 kitchen rentals per year.
Kitchen renters may also need permits from the City of Nanaimo depending on what they are selling, where, and to whom.
It is the renter's responsibility to ensure they are complying with city and VIHA regulations.
Kitchen Equipment
The kitchen has multiple commercial fridges, a commercial 6 burner electric range. A secondary 4 burner residential range. A commercial under-counter dishwasher is also available for use, and should be used to sterilize dishes and utensils before and after they are used.
For dry materials which are required to be stored in the kitchen there is locking cabinets available.
While there are some pots and utensils, renters should plan on brining their own to ensure they have what they need.
Cooking Restrictions
Absolutely no deep frying or cooking products which create a fire risk or cleaning liability. There is no overhead fire suppression on our ranges. Our cooking ranges are to be used for baking and cooking which does not create a fire risk or put grease into the air.
Cleaning
All the chemicals required for cleaning the kitchen are provided. It is the renters responsibility to clean the kitchen using the appropriate and documented procedures both before and after they use the kitchen.
Past uses
The Hall's kitchen is generously sized with two ranges, two sinks and commercial fridges. Because of the size of the kitchen, it can be used for more than just catering for the hall.
In addition to the Kitchen's use as a catering kitchen to support the hall, it has been used in the past for:
- Cooking classes,
- Take out catering,
- Canning for resale,
- Baking for resale,
- Making ginger-ale,
- Large Family gathering cooking.
